During British rule in India, Christian Missionaries also came in from different parts of Europe, to spread the Gospel message. These missionaries used the approach of providing for primary needs of tribes and scheduled castes of India, through building of health care facilities and schools / colleges. They learnt Tamil language as an essential means of communication. Quite a few mastered the language and some outsanding ones are: (1) Veeramaa Munivar: an Italian named Constantine Joseph Beschi, who wrote "ThaembaavaNi" and "Sadhuragaraathi". Also translated ThirukuraL, Thevaaram and Thirupugazh into Latin and other European Languages. (2) G. U. Pope: a Canadian, who translated ThirukuraL and Thiruvaasakam into English. (3) The "Comparative grammer Linguist of Dravidian Languages, Rev Bishop Dr Robert Calwell. He built the first CSI church in Tinnevely District (Tirunelveli). Coming from Ireland, he settled himself at a small village, Idayangudi (4 KM from ThisayanviLai, 66 KM from Tuticorin and 75 KM from Tirunelveli in South India. His birth and death centenaries are celebrated by Tamil Nadu Government, establishing a museum at the small house (17'x11') he lived between 1841-1883, with his wife Eliza Caldwell. He mastered Tamil and later other Dravidian languages and wrote the "Comparative Grrammer of Dravidian Languages. He also wrote other important research records in Tamil, "Relationship of Hinduism and Christianity" (bringing out words and phrases from Tamil included in the Bible), "Records of the early history of Tinnevely Mission" and "Political & General History of the District of Tinnevelly". Dr Robert Caldwell built the church in 1942 and in 1958, a new church was built nearby. TN Govt has preserved both the original church and the residence as a heritage site, added with a museum. Dr Robert Caldwell's brother from London sent a special 4-bell instrument to toll in the church and it actually produces an unique music (added at the end of this video), every time it tolls. Dr Robert Maxwell passed away in Kodaikanal in 1883 and wished that his body be buried in the church where he spent most of his life. Not only his body, but also his wife's body (labelled "Mother of Isreal rests here) are under the carpet of the pulpit area of the Church of Idayangudi. An Irishman, born on May 07, 1814, came into India as a Christian Missionary and ended up as a Tamil Scholar. I attended a wedding at this church on Nov 21, 2022 and the opportunity presented the insight for this video and background research details.
